"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carrol is an absurdist classic, mistakenly considered to be a children's book. In the last 150 years it has been interpreted in different mediums thousands of times, with each decade adding newer perspectives on its content. After decades of analysis and adaptations (and misinterpretations - too), dealing with such a concept today brings along a high risk of falling into clichés (many of which were induced by Disney's viciously inaccurate take on the book). There's been so many weak, shallow and boring takes on the book, that each time I hear of another "Alice"-themed project, my primary reaction is suspicion. Not in the case of this record...
CRuNCH 22 create a rare kind of sound. It begins with the odd combination of instruments and ends deep within the complicated minds of people that play them. As a composer and musician myself, I'm often curious about what other people's music is made of. Knowing these three individuals personally - there are plenty of things I still can't find a way to explain. But whatever this chemistry is based on, - the result hits the right spot in my brain.
As much as I'm curious about the creator's original intention, I still perceive other people's music on a personal level. I don't really know what the guys from CRuNCH wanted to do with the book, but I do know what this album does to me: it's a quirky unpredictable journey through a person's sleeping mind. I've seen such dreams: multi-layered, overloaded with details, jumping from one thing to another without any reasonable explanation, with its funny and confusing moments. Hearing these dreams translated into sound on this album is nearly as exciting as meeting a person who you share some kind of rare experience with - an old distant friend of sorts.
As an artist, I'm very well familiar with this feeling of slight confusion after you complete a work, based on a stream of consciousness: you're certain about what you intended to do, and that your experience guided you to do it the best way possible. But as you look at the final result - it's quite hard to comprehend what exactly have you made. You do like it, but you can't find the right words to explain it. This is where you - the listener - should set your mind free, and let the artist's subconscious resonate with yours.
I would advise to read Lewis Carrol's book before listening to this album, and forget as much as you can about any film/cartoon adaptation of it. This might help you orientate through the plot, and allow you to focus on other details (which there's really a lot of). Close your eyes, listen, and allow your mind to wander with the music and make up its own images...
...and then - listen again...
Markey Funk, February 2016
Last summer, when we were making the graphics for the album we asked our good friend and amazing DJ, Markey Funk, to write the linear notes for the album. He said that he would be happy to do so but was very busy at the time. Last week, about a month after the album was released, Markey finally found the time to write the notes. Here they are!
We are happy to announce that our album launch will take place in this amazing event on February 25th at the Bascula club in Tel-Aviv. This multi-disciplinary party will include our live show, as well as three DJ sets (Markey Funk, DJ Bush Beats, Turnymator+Doobo), Circus Artists (Shay Ramot, Neta Peleg and Lior Page), Video art (PlanktOn) and Visual Art (Johanna Jones, Jack TML).
Join us to celebrate Alice's 150th unbirthday and our album release!

Some nice reviews:
"...The single, “Down The Rabbit Hole” is a mind meld of aural explosions, mixing samples with head warping echoes and organ licks that you might find on some Vertigo release. As the drums kick into a heavy break beat, it’s not just a b-boy delight, but a six minute plus opus of sounds you can feel. We’re definitely excited about this debut record."

"האלבום החדש של ההרכב הישראלי הנהדר קראנץ׳ 22, שמורכב ממתופף אדיר, קלידן אדיר ודי-ג'יי אדיר, סובב כולו סביב אליס בארץ הפלאות, וספציפית סביב תקליט שמצא ארז טודרס (הדי-ג'יי האדיר הנ"ל) שבו מקריאים את הספר. גרוב פסיכדלי למעמקי מחילת הארנב? יס, פליז! "
